This piece has lots of Easter Eggs relating to Smithfields, London. It is an area with a long history, going back to the Middle Ages, the rebel William Wallace was executed there (represented here by Mel Gibson from the movie Braveheart), moving forward it was a place for farmers to bring their livestock to be butchered for the London markets, and then became a major meat processing area up to the present day. My brother in law named his meat-centric restaurant Smithfields after this place. This is a Vanitas piece.

Vanitas is a type of painting originating in Europe the baroque period, they are still life paintings that include reminders that life is short, you will die, so think about how you are living. For this series the twist is - Life is short, (especially for the animals who you get your food from!) so make sure your meat is as tasty and ethical as possible.

This series is titled Meet Your Meat: Vanitas for Smithfields. The pieces were created to be shown and sold out of a great restaurant in Ashland, OR called Smithfields.
